Had a couple questions about the picture below over time. Certainly, in Hawaii, you don’t get too many gray sky days, so we took advantage of the drama in the clouds by lighting our fire dancer on the beach in high speed sync mode. The exposure below is 1/5000th at f1.4, at ISO 100. Jerome is a powerful subject and the flames pop against the darkening sky. Portraiture on the beach is one of the many areas we dive into at our workshop at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, and we go there again in May.
Thrilled we are going back to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai again this year. Third year in a row that we are fortunate enough to be invited to teach photography to super small classes at one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is an amazing resort, and one of the most pictorially rich environments I can think of bringing a camera to.
We tackle all manner of camera work, from the basics of exposure, to the handling of a portrait situation, to Speedlight work, as well as big flash work. We go out at beautiful times of the day, and also challenge ourselves to work with harsh, tropical, midday light. We do basics and advanced techniques. We have an array of models, from fire dancers, to athletes. The essence of the teaching there is that it is all done on a small, completely customizable scale. Tutoring for helicopter shooting is available, as well.
Here is the link for the workshops, running from May 13- 17.

Great photos as always, Joe! I’d love to make it out to Hawaii sometime and I’d love to make it out to one of your workshops as well – maybe I can knock both out at the same time this year!
Hi Joe! I know Jerome! Me and my wife Kris-Belle worked with him in Hong Kong Disney years ago. I hope all is well with you! Cheers!
