Exploring Tuscany 2025!
A Destination Photography Workshop with Joe McNally and Tamara Lackey
Produced by Annie Cahill
October 4 - October 10, 2025
Participant Price: $7,985 & Companion Price: $5,615
Tuscany is a well-loved, often visited destination for many reasons. Art, history, vineyards, beautiful landscapes, and of course...the food! Even if you've visited Tuscany before, this workshop week will be unique. Explore this legendary region with Tamara Lackey and Joe McNally, two highly-acclaimed photographers and teachers who together provide a wonderful complement and unmatched range in their photographic toolkits. Tamara and Joe, and the entire workshop team, are dedicated to helping you accelerate your learning and confidence behind the camera (whether that is with lighting, composition, posing, etc) and have a lot of fun and laugher along the way!
We begin our time together in the amazing city of Florence where we will enjoy a wide variety of street photography, learning about history with experienced guides and a private tour, a special sunset shoot and getting up to speed on camera and lighting skills. A highlight of our portrait photography work in Florence will be unique access to a famed Florence theatre with professional talent, and another portrait photography shoot in a gorgeous vineyard on the outskirts of Florence.
An important component of any of our trips is access to truly exceptional experiences. We dream big. We offer our participants a visually stirring tapestry that mixes in vibrant Italian culture, personalities, and beauty.
What can we arrange that our participants would not ordinarily have access to? Locations? Models/talent? Lighting Gear? All unique facets that will challenge and elevate your photography while exploring a beautiful part of the world. That's why we’ll move from Florence to northwestern Tuscany and the wonderful town of Pietrasanta in the Lucca region. Pietrasanta is a vibrant artist community filled with sculptors, painters and a wide variety of artisans to photograph. Pietrasanta is located in between the Apuan Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, plus it's near famed marble quarries. A very special highlight of this workshop is that we have a buyout of a small, beautiful, boutique hotel right in the heart of this lovely town; our workshop class will be the only guests in this hotel.
Nothing separates a workshop trip experience like when we're able to "own a property" and have the opportunity to move into a hotel or property, relax, and roam freely! Gather in the lounge late in the evening or very early in the morning, spread out and edit pictures together, make noise, hang out, and have dedicated hotel staff for all our needs. It is an incomparable experience. We have found over time that literally buying out a unique intimate lovely hotel creates a wonderful atmosphere of security and comradery for all our attendees.
The workshop week will include lighting and portrait demonstrations, local excursions, critiques, in addition to one-on-one sessions with Joe and Tamara.
Join us for an exciting week of great picture-making, learning, food, wine, and much more!

- A Unique Visit! Even if you've been to Florence and Tuscany, this will be different. We work with experienced guides who will get us access otherwise not available. And two experiences in one trip - the City of Florence and the artist community of Pietrasanta. We worked hard to find a special location outside of the bustling city of Florence (and to avoid the hoards of crowds and tourists) to experience a variety of portrait opportunities, scenics, and street shooting.
Tamara and Joe are revered throughout the photography industry not only for the ongoing significance and humanity of their work, but also for their relentless passion for the pursuit of a picture. When they teach, they don’t simply “lead” a workshop. They are deeply involved in the joy and success of the entire group. They teach from the heart, and they offer lessons that revolve around not only the mechanics of better picture making but are also mindful of capturing emotion, beauty and sharing the storytelling power of pictures.
Tamara’s focus on expressiveness and authenticity - whether it is with children, animals, landscape, color, even creative post-processing - is widely recognized throughout the industry. She also cares deeply about her non-profit work and seeks to inspire others to recognize the impact that photography can have on affecting real change.
Joe’s knowledge of shaping any manner of light is truly legendary. He is cited in (and outside of) the industry as The Real Deal (hence the title of his recent book) because he is a rarity: A lifelong, working photographer with photographs that are just as striking as the stories he shares - not just his captivating tales of uncommon adventure but also his truly fascinating accounts of just how far he goes to get the shot. Joe’s knowledge of light, both natural and artificial, is legendary, and he is one of the most impactful photographers of our time.
