I enrolled in Better Pictures with Joe during January of 2026. I thought it would be great to interact with other photographers and learn from such a renowned photographer. It has been so much more! Joe is not only such an amazing photographer, he is an amazing human being with such a great ability to teach. We don’t just learn “how to, ”we learn why. More importantly, we learn how to think as a photographer. Joe vocalizes everything that goes through his head when approaching and conducting a photoshoot. I have learned so much through my time in the program, from telling a story with a photo, to effective planning and preparation for a photoshoot long before you arrive. 
Joe doesn’t just teach; he mentors and supports his students. He is an open book and will answer any question, and always in a way to build you up. Along with Joe, Annie Cahill has a wealth of knowledge, and she is also available for any questions and makes the experience so pleasant and rewarding.
This program provides the opportunity to learn alongside other amazing photographers. Photography is so often a solo activity, so it was wonderful to share in this experience with photographers equally as passionate as I am. Everyone embraces this program whole-heartedly and is always there to help and encourage others. 
I can honestly say that I have had great life changing moments because of this program. I have learned a new way of thinking when there is a camera in my hands. I have captured images in a way that I never imagined. Most importantly, these images have impacted those on the other end of my lens in a positive way, and for this and so much more I will always be grateful to Joe for providing me with this opportunity to grow through Better Pictures.

I have been lucky enough to travel with Joe McNally on his photo tours, to be in the field beside him, watching how he sees light; how he pushes for the image that matters.

But when the trip ends, Joe is no longer right there beside you. That direct access - being able to ask, observe, learn from him in the moment - is what I always missed. Photography can be a lonely pursuit. You plan and create images alone, wonder about the setups, the light, the techniques, and just keep second-guessing yourself. I can be sitting on an image, not sharing it, unsure if it actually works. Or planning a session with questions I don’t quite know the answers to. 

All this changed with the Better Pictures with Joe community. It is an ongoing conversation and access to one of the world’s leading photographers. Someone who genuinely cares, wants you to learn and grow. The community is warm, constructive and generous. They show up for each other. There is daily communication by chat, regular live calls with Joe that every time turn into a beautiful learning experiences. The photo critiques with real constructive feedback are truly educational.  What I love about Joe’s approach is the challenges and assignments he gives. They are a push to test something new and let go of your habits. It feels like direct access, and it feels like being part of a true team. A home, where you get real help and get pushed to do better - Joe never lets anyone settle. Unless you want to. 

The Better Pictures with Joe is in a league of its own - nothing like most photography groups online.

I have also joined Joe in the field, the Amazon, Norway, Ellis Island, and Estonia. Each trip has shaped how I see and how I shoot. This community is where that conversation continues. If you've ever wished a workshop didn't have to end, this is like one, the connection, the activities and learning just keeps going. I don't just learn here. I belong here.
