Kind of cool that two bits of news have to do with Australia – a country I had the great pleasure to visit several times and the place where I first met Annie – true fact:) at the Sydney Olympic Games.
Music and pictures!
Recently I was contacted by Darren James, who is an enormously popular radio host in Melbourne, and a very active, enthusiastic photog. His show, Weekend Breakfast with Darren James is widely listened to. Out of the blue, his station reached out, and given our photo connection, we had a great chat. Lots of fun. Honestly, though, given the wonder of radio, one of the reasons it was such a fun thing to engage in is that Darren asked me to submit my favorite couple of songs, which he then opened the program with. It really got me thinking about the music that gets me through, and has stuck with me for many years. So much fun.
Here’s what I shared.
William DeVaughn, Be Thankful for What You Got.
Brook Benton, Rainy Night in Georgia.
I almost threw in Laura Nyro and Labelle, Gonna Take a Miracle. It’s a song about two lovers, kind of sad, but with the title, it became my theme song when I moved to NYC out of school and tried to get a career as a photographer going:-)
Some screen grabs of the albums…..
And looking forward to tonight (Monday November 30) and hanging out with my favorite Aussie and Nikon Ambassador Jerry Ghionis for a virtual evening hosted by Paul’s Photo. Tickets here!
Fun video we did last year….
Hang in everyone….hoping that light at the end of this tunnel is getting brighter and closer. Stay safe! More tk….
I grew up to different music. Nonetheless with similar results. In addition, I always travel with at least one or two books. Do you have any favorites? When in Portugal with you, I started reading Fernando Pessoa’s “The Book of Disquiet.” I wouldn’t recommend this to many as it’s a very difficult read.
When we were in Santa Fe, I passed through Taos and went to the ranch of D.H. Lawrence. I took a photograph of the tree where he and Georgia O’Keefe once stood. She was the subject of your editor and mentor, Mr. John Loengard.
In essence, it’s not simply the camera gear you carry, but what else do you carry that makes the picture worth discussing. The New York Times did a wonderful story on life. Ironic as it may seem, he was your editor.
If you had a few books to carry with you on assignment, what would they be?
I live in Melbourne and listened to Darren James speaking to you Joe, and have started following your blog as a result.
I completely agree with music being important – it forms the soundtrack to our lives, to quote a corny cliche. I wrote a blog post about just that. Maybe you have a minute to take a look some time.

I love photography too and still have my Nikon F60 (yes, a film camera) that my husband bought me back in 1998. I guess I’ll go digital at some stage.
I look forward to your next visit to Australia and to reading more of your blog.
That Marvin Gaye album cover is so iconic to me. Always wondered who shot it…now I know – Jim Hendin, a Detroit-bashed photographer who became the exclusive photographer for Motown Records and did an incredible array of albums and portrait work for their artists. Very cool.
love your images, still can’t similar skin color with my Nikon, which picture style you shoot with? any post processing tip?
No picture style, just balance for the scene, and mixing in flash to taste. I find the LCDs on Nikons, both DSLR and mirrorless to be very close to color accurate in terms of what I would anticipate for a final product.
Thank you for finding that out. I have always wanted to know that but didn’t do the leg work. Fantastic album cover.
That music goes right to heart, K-Man….just love it. Pertinent now as it was when he wrote, even more so.
Absolutely right. Music is in my head much of the day, an ongoing soundtrack. Thanks for stopping by the blog!
Thanks K-Man….always wanted to know that. Marvin is still important and iconic today as he ever was.
