If you’re going to trek into the woods, no better company than Amber Tutton, our magnificent, hardy model. And of course, a crew from Lastolite. So happy I started working with Lastolite all those years ago. We’ve stuck together for many years, trading ideas, designing products, and, well, running into the woods, both real and imagined, on photo shoots. Like the pic below, I’m sure Amber would agree her footwear is quite stylish! 🙂
This shoot was designed for video, and the aim was to run through a whole bunch of light shapers, ones that have been around for a while and a couple brand new ones. My job was to keep concentrating on a shot, all the while explaining to camera what we were doing and why. It was a fun juggle, and frankly Amber made my job easy. She braved the cold (Birmingham, UK in March!) and just gave me great look after great look. Lovely makeup and styling by Ellie Hoccom and hair by Juliet Johnson.
The scene above, shot by Will Holowka of Manfrotto. We were definitely out in the country with the intrepid Lastolite crew! That’s the Halo, held by Mark Langley. It is in diffuse mode, to shield Amber from the sun. The one clamped to the C-stand is the reflector version.
Below is a hot linked list of all the stuff we used. To take a look at the videos, which Lastolite started rolling out a couple weeks ago, go to the App to see more behind-the-scenes: Lastolite By Manfrotto on the App Store or Google Play. Or check in on their Facebook page and on their Instagram page.
Okay, here we go….gear in the field! For the shot of Amber on the road, we used two Ezybox Pro Strips (on C-Stands as always) which is a beautiful source that can accommodate two Speedlights via the Ezybox II Speedlight Bracket. One was the main, and the other provided a tiny bit of rim light. The sun was in and out a lot, so frankly that rim would occasionally just get consumed by the existing light. There’s a beauty fill, radiating up at Amber from an SB-5000 Speedlight on a Manfrotto Magic Arm bounced into a snazzy new fill reflector, the Halo. Here’s the link to check it out– Halo Compact Reflector.
Shot of Amber full length is the Nikon D850. The shot of her in the pink sweater is Nikon Z6.

I’ve always liked the way that Joe treats a subject with light, the angle and especially his use of environment. I’ll always be a huge fan.
Thanks Joe – Great post! Question – would you always use a tripod for something like this?
Good gear ,Beautiful location , lighting and Model
Yes, I believe so. The stability is important, and keeping your lines straight…..all best
I really want to be your model. Love your work
Great blog! As always! Just FYI – The link for the Halo reflector is broken.
thank you, will fix!
I like the behind the scenes look at the photos. It lets people see the work put into making a shot look perfect.
Amazing. You always amaze me by posting such things. Nice location.
