Always beautiful, what else is there to say? From the pace of life, to the food, to the landscape, to the richness of color, and the mix of people and history, it ranks as one of the all time places to go and know about. The place is a magnet for the camera, so it’s a natural that the intrepid Liza Politi, Annie Cahill, Michael Cali and I are heading there for two weeks of photo workshops, with an emphasis on light and storytelling. Not so much flash, this time around, but more on using light as a language to connect picture to picture, and build a story that makes a place or a person come alive for someone who has not been to the south of France, but needs good pictures to transport them there.

Last time I was there, I visited and interviewed one of the truly ultimate storytellers with a camera, David Douglas Duncan. A peerless photographer, he, along with his esteemed colleagues at LIFE, set the bar high for photojournalists everywhere. He just turned 102, and when I did visit him, at the age of 96, he was still shooting, with a Coolpix, and shared wonderful, tough, and impactful memories of his time in the field during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, his life and times with Picasso, and his sojourns in the Middle East. As the title of one of his books states, he was truly a “Yankee Nomad.”
Have a hope to see Mr. Duncan again. Would absolutely love it if Annie could meet him, and his amazing wife, Sheila. He remains one of the true icons of this industry.

The South of France is up there with one of the most beautiful places I have visited. I try to go back to the South of France every year or 2 in the summer. You get brilliant summer sun and the place is wall to wall with beauty. Perfect for both a holiday and photo shoots!

I would love to have met him! I did my Master’s Thesis on him back in 1992 … Combat Photography – At an art school, they thought I was nuts, but as a Marine back in the 1970s, and as a civilian photographer for the Army in the 1980’s, how could I not write about men like David Douglas Duncan … A Marine in WWII, and a photographer of Marines in Korea and Vietnam. And we can’t overlook his part in introducing the rest of the world to Nikkor lenses … A great photographer, and as you know, a better human being. I salute him!
