I’ll be working on assignment in NYC a lot in the next few weeks, and really looking forward to shooting close to home. I’ve always responded to the city, and its energy, with a camera in hand. Not to say it isn’t occasionally daunting, hectic, or occasionally even harrowing, but it’s almost always worth it. Teaching a National Geographic Workshop this weekend, and then, after a series of shoots in DC, back to NY for a project. There is nothing like NY for location, location, location.

The harbor.
It’s been a long, wonderful tussle with the city, wresting imagery from fortress Manhattan, with its glass, steel and high walls, as formidable on some days as the gates of Mordor. You get smoked a fair bit, but then, the city gives you gift. Looking forward to pounding some concrete this weekend, camera slung, hopes as high as ever.

Love these shots! Can’t wait to shoot NYC
I’ve been following you for years Joe. Wonderful harbor shot with the Lady and the Island. I’d love to attend one of your events if you are ever in the Pacific Northwest again. Thanks for all the inspiration.
Beautiful images, Mr. McNally! Can’t wait to make some memories this weekend via Nat Geo.
Hey Joe, with the new exposure compensation choice since the D4, do you keep it set so that it is global like you have always talked about in your books or have you changed to the new “background only” option in the new cameras? Thanks
I’m using background only! It’s terrific as it separates the compensation factors for flash and the ambient environment.
I am drawn to your images of the WTC Antenna climb like a moth to a flame. Sweaty palms, and a queasy stomach yet I can not seem to turn away.
That climb was a long time ago. I was pretty young and a little crazy, perhaps….:-)
As we get older our physical abilities diminish and our intelligence increases. The result is we stop doing such crazy things. But amazing shot.
