Relationships are everything in this business. Just a truism. Our studio has been blessed with working with wonderful talent for many, many years now, and I often revisit that talent. I love to photograph the same folks, perhaps even many times. Trust builds, and different things reveal. Also I love showing up for a shoot and knowing I’ll have a good day behind the lens because I’m essentially photographing a friend.
The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has been fantastic with introducing us to local talent on the Big Island over the years.
And this year we had the great fortune at meeting Cassie who was a delight for our workshop photographers. Absolutely beautiful, and a wonderful dancer, steeped in the knowledge of the traditional dances of the islands. I apologized to her for being on the beach without the benefit of music, and she just smiled and said it was fine, she had the music in her head. Another reason to love dancers!
The below is shot with a Nikon Z7 camera and the new 85mm f1.8. Using the new “eye detect” feature, and trying to stress it a bit, honestly. It got right under the headdress and found her eyes. Background is a Lastolite 2 meter Skylite Rapid, fitted with blackout material, and again, as per always, my supports for the lights are Avenger c-stands.
Below, I am shooting the D850 at f/9 at 1/200th of a second, out on the rocks, lighting Cassie with a Profoto B1X fitted with a vertically oriented 1×3 strip soft box, firing through a fabric grid. Shot quickly here and got out of the way, so the class could enjoy her lovely rhythms and expressions.
Just another wonderful year at Four Seasons Hualalai, a favorite, beautiful place. An amazing treat to teach photography there!
