Just a quick note from NIPHEC, in Lagos, Nigeria, which is definitely a whirling dervish of a city. There is an amazing energy here in the burgeoning photographic community. Fly home on Friday to an assignment in DC this weekend, and then Denver, and, by the end of next week, I’ll be teaching at the Julia Dean Workshops in LA for the first time. Lagos to DC to Denver to LA–that’ll be a bit of a head spin.
For the technically inclined, Udoka is facing off with a new Lastolite umbrella box, which has a really deep parabola shape. I’ve stuck a ratcheting Tri-flash in it, and then caught a little glimmer of the light for the back of her orange scarf with a gold, reflective version of a Tri-flip, which is just a really handy relfector/diffuser that pretty much goes with us everywhere.
More tk….
It looks incredible! I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next at your next class in Nigeria
Brilliantly shot photograph of stunning Udoka!
Joe

I once heard an interview with Scott Kelby and he spoke of a portfolio review in which you had told him he was great at making beautiful people look beautiful and that he needed to photograph interesting people or something to that effect. I took that statement to heart for myself and have been working to photograph interesting people and make them look as amazing ans I can this image is of an amazing and beautiful person and portrait and I am summarily impressed and motivated to continue my quest.
thank you for the honest insperation
The class was just awesome. Thanks Joe.

Joe. Great portrait mate.
I was born and raised in what is now Zimababwe and can tell you (or should I say your readers) that photographing Africans in all their traditional dress is awesome. They all seem to be not only photogenic but able to express themselves and emotions in a way that the camera can capture.
A great continent for portrait work.
Thanks for sharing.
Joe’s gentleman and a natural teacher.
Thanks for sharing from your truckload of knowledge and insight.
Beautiful. looking forward to seeing and reading more about your African trip.
Crazy good portrait, just amazing. One of my facorites all time!
Is this with the parabolic, reflective mega umbrella? Did you use a diffusing cover? The gradation is amazing.
It was great learning from Joe McNally, hope to have you back in Nigeria soon!
So beautiful Joe!
