I’ve got a bunch of people to thank. I just had a wonderful weekend here in Milan, Italy, being welcomed and warmly received. I had a show at the Foundation Bandera for the Arts in Busto, just outside of Milan, and I have never had my pictures displayed better. It was just wonderful. I mean, they wrapped couple of cars with pictures, which is way cool.
(Gives me some marketing notions. Maybe I could get a cab medallion in NY? Forget the yellow cab deal. Wrap it in B&W nudes, and put a rotating portfolio on top with one of those electric displays? I probably couldn’t pass the test for my hack license, though. I don’t know the streets of Moscow well enough…)
[More after the jump]
Back to Milan. This whole ball got rolling in the head of my dear friend Federica Brunini, who emailed me last year and suggested we do a show. (I’ve been spending a couple weeks a year teaching in Italy, so she thought it would make sense.) I said sure, and immediately consigned it to one of those “good photo ideas that are never gonna happen cause it is just so tough to do and it’s hard to find sponsors” and on and on. But dang if she didn’t do it, by enlisting the help of the Foundation, run by Franco and Latitzia Bandera, the city of Busto, and Azonzo Travel. (Fabio Chisari, who runs the agency, can get anybody, anywhere, anytime, even pain in the ass photogs.)
We could not have participated on my end without Dano, my good friend Dan Steinhardt, of Epson. Take a few minutes and check out his work. He sees and makes beautiful pictures out of stuff most of us just walk by. Dano came through big time for us, as always, and after editing, discussion, printing, framing and just hard work in general, 80 pictures made it onto the walls.
So I came over, and lectured at the White Star Adventure Bookstore in downtown Milan, which may be the most beautiful bookstore I have ever been in. Also spent a few hours on Friday at a high school in Busto, sharing pictures and questions with a roomful of teenagers. Again, very cool. Show opened Saturday night.
I’ve had way too much pasta and fun, which is the Italian way of things. I love it here, and am deeply grateful to the everyone who made this happen. Perfetto!
Congratulation for the success of your show.
Wow, that car is so cool! You gotta get you one of those wraps for you own ride! Definitely some marketing opportunities there.
First cars…then I can see Virgin Air wrapping a whole plane in one of your images….
Man… I wish I could have seen your show.
Congrats on your succes!!
Hello Joe,
In your book you describe a method of holding the camera by wedging it into your left shoulder. I also think I saw Brad using this method during your presentation at B&H Photo last month but, unfortunately, I didn’t pay close attention.
Could you please post a few photos that depict this method of camera hold. The words alone just aren’t clear enough.
Thanks,
Mark (East Lansing, MI)
Man, I can see brad trucking down the tappan zee right now drinking a latte arm on the window sill… feeling cool.
too bad you can’t bring it back with you!
Not sure why you would like to drive a cab in Moscow (traffic is crazy!), but come visit us anyway, and I’d be glad to show you around so you’ll get to know the streets better, wink-wink.
Oleg…Moscow, literally one of my favorite places on earth, as is Russia….Joe

Joe, have you been to Russia often? I saw some pictures of yours from Moscow and Chechnya but they date back to 1997 and that’s more then 10 years from now! Seeing you travel all around the world it’d be great to see you in person – don’t forget to post on your blog if you’ll be heading our way!
